Officeworks will move its national corporate headquarters to an office building at Chadstone shopping centre in Melbourne’s south-east, where its new landlord, ASX-listed Vicinity Centre, is capitalising on increased interest in suburban workplaces.

While Officeworks’ existing home is in the city’s east, the move dovetails nicely with Vicinity’s existing strategy to exploit is vast real estate holdings, building apartments, hotels and even office towers on available space within shopping centres.

“So finding an office with very high green star and energy ratings and a zero-carbon certification was mandatory,” she said.

Officeworks, one of Australia's first big-box retailers, is preparing to roll out a small-store format aimed at snaring a larger share of the $30 billion office products market by infiltrating CBD and inner-city areas.

Officeworks managing director Mark Ward says the retailer is looking for suitable sites after spending more than a year testing the small-format model and refining the product range. ''There is a bit more work to do, then we'll look to expand that format, mainly in the CBD,'' Mr Ward said before Wesfarmers' annual strategy day next week.

The new stores will be between 400 and 600 square metres – less than half the size of an average 1400-square-metre ''big-box'' store.
