Is CBD a drug?

Not all CBD oils are created equal. ‘Products approved by official bodies such as the MHRA, the [US] FDA, NICE and the EMA are the ones that are medicines and can only be prescribed,’ says Dr Hindocha. ‘The ones on the high street are a much lower strength, so there’s not a lot of evidence to say that they work.’ A study in the journal Nature found that 600mg per day eased anxiety symptoms, but the Food Standards Agency recommends stopping at 70mg a day (about 28 drops of 5% CBD). The message? Start with a low dosage, building it up slowly – and you want to look for signs of third-party lab testing in any off-the-shelf pick.

But things get complicated when it comes to CBD: in its pure form, without any THC (or less than 0.2% THC), CBD would not be considered a controlled drug under this act and is therefore allowed to be sold on the market. However, if a CBD product contained any controlled cannabinoids – such as THC – unintentionally or otherwise, then the product, too, would be controlled. Furthermore, if CBD products claim to offer medical benefits, then they need to be licensed as a medicine according to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
